Jimmy Kereseka is a PhD scholar within Project Halo. Jimmy’s research is focusing on assessing mangrove species composition along with key physiological and structural attributes, including tree height, density, diameter at breast height (DBH), root types, and seedling presence. In addition, it will monitor ecological changes over time to inform targeted restoration and conservation strategies. The findings will support policy development, strengthen community-based management approaches, and help establish ecological reference conditions critical for future climate adaptation planning and modelling. By identifying suitable areas for restoration, the project can guide where mangroves could be successfully re-established. This research aims to understand mangrove forest composition, their attributes and the ecosystem services they provide that characterize different forest types under local environments in Fiji before and after restoration. The study also intends to develop an indicator framework to measure pre- and post-restoration outcomes in relation to these ecosystem services. Jimmy is excited about Project Halo as it will go beyond being just a PhD research opportunity—it also includes a practical tidal restoration component to be implemented onsite. This means that our individual research projects are directly connected to, and will actively support, the broader Halo field project
