Janani Priyanka is a PhD scholar within Project Halo. Janani’s research is focusing on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from mangrove ecosystems and how land-use changes influence GHG fluxes. Despite their global importance as carbon sinks, coastal wetlands also emit GHGs, and land-use changes that degrade these ecosystems can substantially increase their contribution to global warming. Research in this area is therefore crucial for enhancing GHG accounting and informing sustainable mangrove management strategies.
Janani’s research aims to quantify GHG fluxes (carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), and nitrous oxide (N₂O)) from mangroves and sugarcane farmlands in Fiji. In addition, her research explores the key drivers of soil flux variability, including tidal inundation, water level fluctuations, and soil characteristics such as organic carbon content, microbial community composition, and salinity. This comprehensive approach seeks to provide deeper insights into carbon dynamics and support effective climate mitigation and blue carbon management efforts.
